KOKESHI by TAKEDA MASASHI

Product details

This Takeda Masashi kokeshi doll is called Doshi meaning the child's mind. It depicts a young girl with pinwheel-shaped hair falling over the top of her head. Both the hair and body display the use of “Chatter Work”, (Birikan’na), to give texture to the form. On the body, the artist continues to use the same carving technique to ornament the haori with pinwheels. Simple, shallow carvings depict innocent eyes. There is an inscription identifying the artist. Artist's stamp is on the bottom.

Any kokeshi by Takeda Masashi (1930-2015) are highly sort after and very collectable as they are rare to find and also in such mint condition as this one is. Takeda Masashi studied under Takeda Usaburo.

His kokeshi have a unique style, with rich wooden tones and carved flower detail, and beautifully detailed, decorated Kimono with some kind of carved floral motif. Takeda Masashi appreciates the natural decorative nature of wood by giving his dolls great character and depth. Paint is used sparingly, allowing the natural texture of the wood to shine through.

This kokeshi is 14cm tall in excellent condition and a great small doll to add to a collection.
