A rare kokeshi by Hideo Ishihara (1925-1999) and exquisite in it’s detail of traditional dark reds and many motifs, both found in nature and in textile design. Ishihara Hideo illustrates numerous kimono styles in both painted form and carving and utilises simple graphic treatment to emphasise the strong character of his dolls.
This X- large kokeshi by Ishihara Hideo doll is 30cm tall & 59cm round at it’s widest circumference. Her body is beautifully hand carved and etched with intricate patterns all over its large body and hand painted with deep and dark reds. Kokeshi are made from one piece of wood that is chosen very carefully for it’s woodgrain and this burl has a natural flaw down the back which has come from age and climatic conditions. Otherwise in excellent condition and a highly collectable piece by the serious kokeshi collector. It has a simple sumi-e drawing of the face which is the one stroke technique and carved and hand painted hair so only a very small face is showing accentuating the drama of the skilled work on the body. His dolls are usually finished with a simple wax coating. Ishihara Hideo dolls are highly collectable.
