Large Mid-Century Modern Creative Kokeshi Doll
Product details
Make a spectacular architectural statement in your home with this exceptionally large vintage Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi doll. Standing at a magnificent 42.5cm tall, this piece is an extraordinary example of mid-century minimalism, celebrating bold geometric form and masterfully restrained hand-painted details.
Sculptural Triple-Tier Silhouette & Fine Artistry
This doll features a mesmerizing, structurally complex silhouette carved into three distinct segments. It is crowned with a highly unusual, elongated topknot (mage) adorned with a single carved red and white plum blossom (ume).
Below, her perfectly rounded head showcases highly expressive, minimalist features—serene closed eyes, a tiny crimson mouth, and perfectly geometric hair bangs rendered with exceptionally fine brushstrokes. Her body is beautifully turned into a sweeping hourglass shape, completely wrapped in a mesmerizing, tight pattern of lathe-turned rings. These horizontal lines give her a incredibly modern, textile-like texture, beautifully broken up by a textured bamboo-leaf (take) obi belt at her waist and delicate freehand bamboo stalks at her base.
A Rare Trophy-Sized Collector's Piece
At nearly 43cm tall, this is a heavy, trophy-sized vintage doll. Carved from a premium, light-grained Japanese hardwood, it has aged over the decades to display a flawless, creamy-honey coloration. Finding creative kokeshi dolls of this grand scale in such pristine condition is a true rarity.
