Large Vintage Creative Kokeshi Doll by Hosaka Torao
Product details
Make a grand, sophisticated addition to your collection with this magnificent vintage Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi doll by the prominent mid-century artisan Hosaka Torao (1924–1996). Standing at a commanding 37cm tall, this statuesque masterpiece highlights Torao’s celebrated talent for combining structural, elongated wooden silhouettes with deeply elegant, traditional imagery.
Sophisticated Silhouette & Festive Artistry
This exceptional piece features a highly unique, sculptural hourglass silhouette. The design boasts a wonderfully rounded upper torso that tapers down into a slender, sweeping hourglass stem, resting securely on a wide, integrated pedestal base.
The upper portion of her body is beautifully hand-painted with a traditional folding fan (Sensu), a classic Japanese symbol of prosperity, expanding fortune, and high status. The fan is rendered with striking red accents, while the rest of her kimono is decorated with delicate, earthy green and cream chrysanthemum (kiku) roundels. Her serene, narrow eyes and small crimson mouth are framed by an elegant, glossy black traditional updo topped with an ornate gold wire accent.
