A Vibrant, Masterfully Painted Heirloom of Miyagi Prefecture’s Deepest Folk Lineage

Add an absolute cornerstone of Japanese folk art to your display with this pristine, traditional Togatta-Kei (遠刈田系) Kokeshi Doll, standing at 22 cm tall. Hailing from Miyagi Prefecture—widely recognized as the historical birthplace of the wooden kokeshi toy—this piece showcases the flawless brush control, explosive red patterns, and quiet grace that define the Togatta style.

This exquisite doll is left in immaculate condition, retaining the brilliant sharpness of its hand-painted pigments and its authentic unvarnished luster.

Translation of the Base Kanji & Seal

The base of this doll features a striking combination of hand-written black ink calligraphy and the artist's personal square red stamp (hanko). Reading the characters from top to bottom, left to right:

Hand-Written Calligraphy

  • 遠刈田 (Togatta): Denotes the specific geographic mountain hot-spring area in Miyagi where the doll was crafted.

  • 佐藤 (Sato): The artist's family surname. In Togatta, the Sato clan represents one of the most prolific, centuries-old dynastic lineages of Master Wood-turners (Kiji-shi).

  • 一夫 (Kazuo): The artist’s given name.

  • 作 (Saku): Translates directly to "Made by" or "Crafted by".

Red Hanko Stamp

  • 一夫 (Kazuo): The carving inside the scarlet seal mirrors the artist's first name, solidifying its authenticity.

Full Translation: "Made by Kazuo Sato at Togatta"

Classic Togatta-Kei Design Characteristics

  • The Tegure Radiation Garland: The massive, perfectly round head is crowned with a brilliant scarlet Tegure—a traditional stylized red garland pattern painted in heavy radiating strokes, topped with a delicate pop of teal-blue thread ribbon at the brow.

  • Elegant Monalisa Countenance: The face displays the elite craftsmanship expected of the Sato family. It features thin, highly expressive double-creased eyelids curving into narrow, content eyes, paired with a small, dignified red double-stroke mouth.

  • The "Kasanekiku" (Overlapping Chrysanthemum) Kimono: The perfectly straight, cylindrical torso is decorated with a complex, dizzying array of vertical zig-zag lines that represent the abstract, stylized petal folds of overlapping winter chrysanthemums (Kasanekiku).

  • Concentric Color Rings: The top and bottom of the dress are elegantly framed by sharp, lathe-turned horizontal rings of deep red and emerald green, anchoring the busy pattern.

Collector's Notes

  • Excellent Vintage Condition: This piece is a stellar find for collectors. Traditional dolls often suffer from bleeding paint or faded red pigments due to sunlight exposure, but this example remains perfectly crisp, saturated, and clean.

  • Artistic Lineage: Kazuo Sato is an incredibly well-documented and acclaimed Master artisan belonging to the elite traditional tiers of Miyagi craft. His works are prized for their strict adherence to regional rules while capturing a unique sense of warmth and happiness in the facial expression.
