Unique Pair of Vintage Elongated Kokeshi Dolls

Product details

An Elegant Heian-Inspired Masterpiece Pair by a Award-Winning Sosaku Master

Elevate your collection with this stunning and highly unique matching pair of vintage Creative (Sosaku) Kokeshi Dolls, standing at 21 cm tall. This pair is the work of the highly acclaimed mid-century master artisan Yuji Kobayashi (b. 1931).

This set highlights the artist's ability to fuse elegant, sweeping architectural lines with traditional Japanese themes.

Deciphering the Bottom Kanji Inscription

The fluent cursive brush calligraphy written on the base of both dolls reads:

小椋 同 (Ogura dō / Ogura Group)

What does this mean?

Rather than the artist's personal name, this is a guild or group mark. Ogura (小椋) is one of the most ancient, legendary surnames associated with the Kiji-shi (traditional wood-turners) of Japan. Historically, the Ogura clan operated elite woodturning communities throughout the mountains of Japan.

By signing the dolls "Ogura Dō" (Ogura Associates/Group), it acts as a proud stamp of lineage, indicating that these pieces were made under the umbrella of or in collaboration with a prestigious Ogura family workshop, guaranteeing master-level wood-turning pedigree.

Artistry & Design Features

  • Heian Court Elegance: The long, slender, gracefully tapered bodies are a modern, sculptural interpretation of the Juni-hitoe (layered silk robes) worn by noblewomen of the ancient Heian imperial court.

  • Complementary Color Stains: The dolls are designed as a beautiful contrasting pair. One is finished in a deep, regal plum/purple wood stain that beautifully shows off the organic undertones of the grain, while the other is coated in a vibrant, smooth vermilion red.

  • The "Obi" Waistband Accents: Splitting the elongated silhouette is a central, unpainted natural wood ring representing the kimono’s Obi (sash). Each sash features minimal, hand-painted ink illustrations of classical flowers and bamboo leaves.

  • Classical Face Paint: The diminutive heads are beautifully detailed with traditional Heian features, showcasing high, sharp eyebrows, narrow eyes reflecting quiet dignity, and long straight hair framing the sides of the face.

Collector's Notes

  • Very Good Vintage Condition: The set has been exceptionally well preserved. Both dolls maintain fantastic vertical stability despite their narrow silhouettes. The color stains are smooth, uniform, and pop beautifully against one another when paired on a shelf.
