Vintage Hollow Wooden Message Dolls with Original Letters Inside
Step back into post-war Japan with these exceptionally rare 1950s Mailer Kokeshi Dolls. These traditional wooden figures are much more than beautiful folk art—they are literal vessels of history.
Part of a charming, mid-century postal tradition, these hollowed-out Kokeshi dolls were purchased by travelers to be used as three-dimensional postcards. A message would be penned, rolled tightly, tucked into the torso, and the base screwed shut. Wrapped simply in paper and twine, they were sent across the globe to loved ones.
Incredibly, all four dolls in this collection still contain their original, unread handwritten letters from decades ago.
A Glimpse into Post-War Japanese Tradition
-
The Living Artifact: Finding post-war mailer Kokeshi dolls intact is a treat; finding them with their original, rolled-up correspondence still sealed inside is highly uncommon.
-
Hand-Painted Artistry: Each doll features a uniquely expressive face and detailed, hand-painted vignettes along the slender wooden torso—showcasing scenes of traditional Japanese landscapes, iconic architecture like Tokyo Tower, and figures in kimonos under parasols.
-
Intricate Calligraphy: The bodies feature elegant, hand-painted Japanese kanji and script, making each piece an absolute standalone work of art before you even look inside.
Collector's Notes & Display Ideas
