Vintage Creative Kokeshi Doll by Kishi Sadao

Product details

Introduce a classic piece of mid-century design to your collection with this rare Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi doll by the legendary master artisan Kishi Sadao (1911–1998). As a highly celebrated pioneer of the modern kokeshi movement, Kishi Sadao’s innovative woodturning designs earned him Japan's highest honors, including the prestigious Prime Minister's Prize.

Standing at 23cm tall, this exquisite doll is depicted holding a large, traditional circular woven straw hat (kasa), a beautifully symbolic nod to traditional Japanese travelers or dancers. The hat is beautifully detailed with hand-painted red and white chrysanthemums, and features elegant Japanese calligraphy painted directly onto the wood grain.

Her head is gracefully tilted in a gentle bow, sporting a highly stylized, elegant topknot hairstyle adorned with a bright crimson hair ornament. Her natural blonde wood torso is decorated with matching autumn chrysanthemums and delicate purple obis, epitomizing the soft, whimsical charm that makes Kishi Sadao’s work instantly recognizable.
