Description

This classic traditional Tsugaru style kokeshi features a hand-turned wooden body, an indented neck ring, and fine black ink details. The body is accented with bold black and natural wood rings (rokuro-moyo) alongside a stylized peony flower (peony/kiku) motif typical of northern Aomori craft traditions. The doll features a gentle, tranquil expression with hand-drawn eyes, fine eyebrows, and a small painted mouth.

The bottom bears the artist’s signature reading 温湯 (Nuruyu, referring to the hot spring origin) and 佐藤善之助 (Sato Zennosuke).

Why are there feet on the bottom?

Because traditional kokeshi dolls strictly lack carved arms or legs, drawing feet on the bottom base was a famous, playful quirk popularized in the Tsugaru line (pioneered by master artisan Mori Hidetaro and continued by his student, Sato Zennosuke).

Since kokeshi have no visible limbs, the artist whimsically added a pair of painted bare feet underneath as a lighthearted touch—giving the illusion that the doll is "standing" on her feet when set upright, while serving as a unique, highly collectible signature element of this specific lineage.
