Kokeshi

Vintage Mid-Century Heian Period Imperial Court Kokeshi Pair

Product details

Step back into the golden age of Japanese classical history with this exquisite, finely detailed pair of vintage Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi dolls. Representing an aristocratic couple dressed in luxurious Heian Period (794–1185 AD) court costumes, this beautifully matched set captures the refined, poetic elegance of mid-century Japanese historical folk art.

Imperial Court Fashion & Delicate Brushwork

This pair features heavily stylized, rounded silhouettes designed to mimic the expansive, layered robes (Juunihitoe) worn by the ancient Japanese imperial nobility.

  • The Male Courtier (Right - 13cm): Stands tall sporting a prominent, glossy black Kanmuri (traditional court cap) worn by emperors and aristocrats. His warm amber wood body is freehand-painted with sweeping pine needles and great, blossoming autumn chrysanthemums (kiku), while his hands hold a classical folding fan.

  • The Noblewoman (Left - 8.5cm): A beautifully rounded, teardrop-shaped figure with an elegant traditional updo. Her natural blonde wood robes are decorated with a delicate, falling pattern of autumn maple leaves (momiji) and layered violet lapels.

Both figures exhibit serene, minimalist features with downcast eyes, fine-line brows, and tiny crimson lips, evoking the calm majesty of ancient court portraiture.

A Mid-Century Historic Tribute

Dating to the mid-20th century, this set showcases an amazing level of delicate, fine-line brushwork. The premium native hardwoods have matured gracefully over the decades, developing a smooth, lustrous patina that beautifully brings out the natural grain patterns beneath the pigments.
