Vintage Kokeshi

Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi entitled “Mushin | Innocence” by Watanabe, Masao

Product details

Watanabe Masao stands among the luminaries of 20th-century sōsaku Kokeshi, celebrated for his lyrical depictions of innocence and his masterful blending of tradition with modern artistry. Born in Fukushima Prefecture and trained by Yajirō master Sato Tatsuo, Watanabe transitioned into sōsaku Kokeshi creation in the 1950s, bringing a poetic depth to the form.

Unlike dentō Kokeshi, which follow strict regional rules and inherited shapes, Watanabe’s creations are one-of-a-kind works of art, each reflecting his personal vision. His dolls are noted for their sculptural quality, bridging folk tradition with modern aesthetics, sometimes drawing visual influence from mid-century Japanese design. This particular piece is highly representative of Watanabe’s work and celebrates the natural beauty of the wood itself.

The head shape of this doll is unusual, referred to as ‘Hyoutan’ (gourd) or, in some academic circles, ‘Kuri’ (chestnut). The design emphasizes the beauty of the natural wood grain and smooth curves achieved through expert lathe work—hallmarks of this series. The painted Yukata and white sash reflect the beloved Japanese custom of “going to the bath,” while understated hair treatment and small horizontal slashes for the eyes are characteristic features of Watanabe’s style. The doll bears an inscription and stamp, confirming Watanabe as the creator and providing the Kokeshi’s name.

Watanabe’s acclaim includes Prime Minister's Prizes and the designation of “Master of Modern Times.” His influence extends internationally: his dolls are displayed in the Nuremberg Toy Museum and were famously gifted to The Beatles in 1965. Collaborations with Sato Norio further underscore his cultural impact, making signature authentication essential for collectors.

Through his artistry, Watanabe elevated Kokeshi beyond craft, offering quiet meditations on beauty, youth, and impermanence, sculpted in both wood and spirit.

This Mushin Kokeshi is in very good condition. 20cm tall with artist's signature and Hanko stamp on the bottom.
