ARONKA-HIP HIP DECAY SCULPTURE BY SUZANNE MCRAE

Product details

Towering with theatrical poise, (87cm tall) Aronka stands like a silent performer awaiting a cue. This rabbit-like figure is both whimsical and haunting, clothed in striped pantaloons, deep crimson gloves, and elongated ears stitched from worn fabric—each detail echoing the faded grandeur of a bygone carnival.

Suzanne McRae’s sculptural work fuses character, costume, and storytelling. Handmade with visible stitches, aged textures, and expressive posture, Aronka carries the emotional weight of memory and myth. There’s a sense of timelessness here—a creature not from any one place, but from a shared dreamscape of childhood fables and forgotten theatres.

His ears are enormous & upright, made from deep crimson fabric & fur, edged with frayed stitching and dark underlining, create an aura of drama and height. They are a signature flourish—elegant, worn, and eye-catching.

His Attire of striped black and white puffed trousers, reminiscent of antique clown or Pierrot costumes, a cream blouse, tight at the sleeves and loosely ruched at the waist, adds to the old-world charm and a deep brown bow at the neck ties the look together—literally and symbolically.

His hands & feet are covered in rich red fabric, the gloves and shoes feel theatrical and purposeful, suggesting a character that performs or inhabits a story world beyond the sculpture itself. The lace-wrapped legs and tied ankles add delicate, crafted detail.

This sculpture, like McRae’s others, feels as though it stepped out of a lost fairy tale or a dusty theatre trunk—ready to whisper stories to those who look long enough.
