Haniiwa Vintage Kokeshi Pair
Product details
Haniwa are an ancient Japanese sculptural tradition, originating in the Kofun period (c. 300–710 CE), when hollow, unglazed earthenware figures were placed on burial mounds as guardians and ritual objects. Their minimal, abstract forms have continued to inspire generations of Japanese artists.
This pair of kokeshi, created in the 1950s by unknown artist, reinterpret the timeless haniwa aesthetic within the folk art tradition of kokeshi. Both figures are finely balanced in form and proportion, with understated details that recall the solemnity of their ancient models.
They remain in excellent condition, representing not only mid-20th century craftsmanship but also the enduring dialogue between Japan’s ancient past and modern folk art movements.
