Vintage Kokeshi

Hinagiku Kokeshi by Aoki Ryoka

Product details

Aoki Ryoka is a renowned and award-winning female kokeshi artist, known for her beautifully crafted dolls that range from collectible art pieces to charming children’s toys. A true pioneer in the field, she has won three Prime Minister’s Awards and runs her own kokeshi studio with a team of mostly women. Her work blends traditional techniques with a refined, expressive style that makes each piece uniquely special.

Hand-crafted in Japan, this charming kokeshi is named Hinagiku—meaning “daisy”—a nod to the delicate flowers beautifully painted across her kimono.
This design became especially beloved after Princess Michiko selected and purchased a Hinagiku doll in 1969, elevating it to iconic status.

In Japanese symbolism, the daisy represents purity, beauty, peace, and hope—qualities reflected in the doll’s gentle expression and refined artistry. Hinagiku kokeshi are also known for their signature hair bow, which can be crafted from wood or fabric; this piece features the original pink fabric bow.

Standing 18cm tall and in excellent condition, she is a timeless and highly collectible example of mid-century creative kokeshi craftsmanship.
