LARGE KOKESHI by MIYAJIMA MUHITSU

The signature style of Miyajima Muhitsu is abstracted and simple forms. Wood is crucial in his interpretation of the seasons.  As a woodworker, Miyajima-san specializes in beautiful woods with extensive grain patterns and rich colors. 

This kokeshi is titled: 'Kitaguni' meaning Wintry Weather. She is beautifully executed with minimal painted decorations of dark green on the very dark wood. 

This Kokeshi is a well-known design by Miyajima Muhitsu. He was born in 1929 and started as a traditional kokeshi maker in 1950.

This kokeshi is 41cm tall with artist's signature on the bottom and in excellent condition.
