LARGE RARE KOKESHI by TAMURA NOBORU

Tamura Noboru is one of the most unique Sosaku Kokeshi artists, receiving numerous awards during his career, including the Prime Minister Award. it is very hard to find information about this artist.

Her face and eyes are typically Japanese and represent the “windows of the soul”, and are shown bigger and angled downwards. Her body has had the grain of the wood accentuated with a teal stain and almost invisible umi blossoms and hand painted gold leaves. Various woodworking techniques are used to create textural effects like the deep carving and horizontal cut lines to suggest hair and undergarments.

This doll is in very good condition with some aged patina and a few marks around the head (see pics). She is 36cm tall and very collectable as not many Noboru kokeshi are seen. The artist's signature is on the bottom.
