LARGE TRADITIONAL KOKEASHI 02

Product details

Traditional kokeshi dolls were originally made during the middle of the Edo period, (1600 -1868). The kokeshi have a surprisingly little documented history.  The kokeshi were the guardians of children and keepers of their souls. The dolls would watch over their child as they grew up and keep them from harm. The dolls from this period are called traditionals and are still made today in the north of Japan. All traditional kokeshi are signed on the bottom by the maker.

Each traditional kokeshi has it's own style shape and colours which represents the area and family they come from. It must be in your family bloodline to make traditional kokeshi unlike the creative kokeshi made by prominent kokeshi masters.

This kokeshi is very large with traditional black and red hand painted detail, signature and message at the back. This may have been made for a special occassion or a business and has been made in the original way in that it is just one piece of wood.

47cm tall and base is 14cm in diameter
