Large Vintage Creative Kokeshi Doll by Master Noboru Tamura

Product details

A Breathtaking, Award-Winning Mid-Century Study in Texture, Woodcraft, and Winter Plums

Elevate your collection with this magnificent vintage Creative (Sosaku) Kokeshi Doll, standing at an impressive 28 cm tall. This masterpiece is a verified work by the highly celebrated and elite artisan Noboru Tamura (b. 1934), hailing from the renowned woodcraft hub of Gunma Prefecture. Tamura is universally recognized as a technical wizard of the modern kokeshi movement, famous for his incredible ability to combine deeply etched woodcarving with rich, moody organic stains.

This doll is a superb example of Tamura's iconic, award-winning craftsmanship, seamlessly blending traditional rustic textures with an expressive, modern personality.

Artistry & Distinctive Design Traits

  • The Incised Straw Hat (Kasa) & Collar: The top of her large, spherical head is meticulously hand-chiseled with dense, radiating vertical grooves to represent a traditional Japanese straw hat (kasa). This beautifully textured technique is mirrored below on her inner collar and exposed lower hem, adding a wonderfully cohesive, rustic structure to the doll.

  • Large, Soulful Eyes: Unlike the simple, sleeping ink slits found on many mid-century pieces, Tamura’s signature style features large, wide-open, expressive black almond eyes with finely painted upper lashes. Combined with a fine vertical line for the nose and a tiny crimson lip dot, she possesses a uniquely curious and endearing countenance.

  • Finely Groomed Hair: Her hair is rendered using hundreds of thin, individual brown paint strokes that cascade over her brow and down the sides of her face, mimicking real, silken hair catching the light.

  • Ume (Plum Blossom) Barrel Kimono: The barrel-shaped torso is enveloped in a deep, dark forest-green and charcoal wood-stain cloak. Hand-carved and scorched directly into the front are beautiful Ume (Plum Blossoms). By chiseling away the dark stain, Tamura reveals the warm, natural golden under-grain of the timber to form the flower petals, creating a stunning wabi-sabi contrast.

  • Artist Signature: The unvarnished base features Tamura's hand-written signature, ensuring its provenance and high value as an authentic, collectible work of mid-century art.

Collector's Notes

  • Excellent Vintage Condition: This piece is in stellar museum-quality condition. The wood grain on the face remains incredibly clean and bright, completely free of watermarks or typical sun-fading. The deeply stained dark kimono maintains its intense, lustrous saturation, providing a beautiful frame for the carved blonde plum blossoms.

  • Elite Pedigree: Noboru Tamura is a heavily decorated master artisan whose innovative woodcarving techniques earned him numerous high-level awards at the All Japan Kokeshi Competition, including the coveted Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Award. Collectors highly prize his larger barrel-chested dolls for their incredible textural depth and undeniable presence on display.
