Rare 1950s Pair of Vintage "Noddy Head" (Kubi-Furi) Kokeshi Dolls
Product details
Capture the playful, nostalgic essence of post-war Japanese folk art with this delightful, rare pair of early 1950s Kubi-Furi (nodding or "Noddy" head) Kokeshi dolls. Standing at approximately 18cm tall, this pair features a wonderful kinetic design where the heads are loosely jointed on peg necks, allowing them to bobble, tilt, and sway charmingly at the slightest touch.
Whimsical Round Silhouette & Masterful Freehand Painting
This pair represents a traditional couple, masterfully hand-turned into perfectly spherical, chubby bodies that give them an incredibly endearing, compact presence.
-
The Female Doll (Left): Features a magnificent, split-level traditional updo accented with fine, hand-dotted cream details. Her warm, natural wood body is dressed in a soft coral-orange kimono decorated with spiral motifs and traditional fabric patterns.
-
The Male Doll (Right): Showcases a classic topknot hairstyle with a tiny protruding pin accessory. He wears a handsome, deep teal-blue kimono adorned with vibrant green bamboo leaves (take), a traditional symbol of strength, flexibility, and prosperity.
Both dolls feature beautifully aged, sweet facial expressions with squinting, joyful eyes and tiny red lips painted entirely by hand.
A True Post-War Collector's Find
Dating to the early 1950s, these dolls have survived over 70 years with their delicate nodding mechanisms completely intact. The natural hardwood has matured gracefully, developing a rich, authentic golden-honey tone and a soft matte patina that only comes with true vintage age.
