RARE KOKESHI BY KATO KUEN

This particular Kokeshi is in the form of Bosatsu Kannon, (Kanzeon Temple), and is minimally adorned in black and made in the 20th century. These kokeshi dolls often contain a personal prayer inside the base as this one does. This doll epitomizes the Buddhist philosophy that in order to reach enlightenment one must lead a simple and frugal life.
Kato Kuen (1876-1971) was a priest of the Kannon-ji Temple on Mt. Koya, Japan, and was said to be a member of the Imperial family. Japanese temples are not just primarily places of worship, but are also used to house and display sacred objects. Buddhists then come to meditate and pray surrounded by these sacred objects.
This kokeshi is in excellent condition for it's age and is 36cm tall.
