Rare Kokeshi Doll by Sekiguchi

This very rare kokeshi doll by Sekiguchi (1925-2018) is in mint condition and definitely worthy to be added to any serious collection. This very serene kokeshi displays it’s most beautiful woodgrain with little adornment. Some indent and carving to accentuate the hair and face only.  A sweet small face framed by the arms curling above the head. The artist mark is on her lower back. She stands serenely on a plynth of wood. This kokeshi is 45cm tall. I have seen other works by Sekiguchi of this mid century genre but never in mint condition or of this size. This is one for the true collector of mid century modern kokeshi.

Sekaguchi passed away in 2018 but his family carry on with the tradition of making sasaku kokeshi in his own museum where he worked and lived. Sekaguchi was a winner of many awards, such as the Ministry of International Trade Industry Award in 1978, Prime Minister’s Award and many others.
