This piece has been inspired by a Sumi-e drawing brush or calligraphy brush. The most famous calligraphy kokeshi are by artist Shouzan and a tribute to a village named Arima which is famous for calligraphy brush designs. The Fude, or brush, has been integral to Japanese culture since the introduction of standardized writing systems from the continent of Asia in the fifth century. The Art calligraphy, has been held in high esteem, and a means of communication, as well as the Zen practice that evokes harmony and wisdom. 

This cute kokeshi is from the 1950's-60's is 13cm tall. The original texture of the wood on the kokeshi body has been highlighted and hand painted pattern in front and on top. The original cord  is still around it's neck and in very good condition for it's age.
