These traditional wooden Japanese dolls are an absolute joy to collect – how can they not make you smile? This charming piece has a stylised bamboo-patterned kimono and features a classic magi hairstyle adorned with an original red kanzashi hairpin.
A unique detail in this carving is the treatment of the obi – a single deep groove elegantly carved into the solid wood body and detailed blossoms painted onto the dark background. The bamboo leaf motif, painted in expressive black sumi-e brushwork is a hallmark of the Sosaku (creative) style. The artistry shines in the way the natural grain and colour of the wood are highlighted as part of the design itself.
There are some minor markings on the wood ( see pics) and a signature on the side which could be by the artist or the onsen wher she came from.
She is 31cm tall.
