SMALL RARE KOKESHI by BUNKICHI

Sato Bunkichi born 1922-2008 to a family of traditional Tougatta doll makers in Yamagata Prefecture. His kokeshi style uses a very traditional Ikat patterning for his dolls.
The smaller head shape makes Sato Bunkichi's dolls easily recognizable, but they are extremely rare. Ikat is a form of dyeing found mostly in Indonesia & Malaysia and this technique was adapted independently across many different cultures. Here the artist masterfully incorporates this motif onto the bodies of these simple figures.
This kokeshi is only 15cm tall but in excellent condition and highly collectable. The artist signature is on the bottom.
