Very Rare Vintage Ryoka Kokeshi by Aoki Ryoka – 1970s
This exceptionally rare kokeshi by Aoki Ryoka is a stunning museum-quality example of her artistry. Aoki Ryoka is one of the most respected female kokeshi artisans, renowned for her Hinagiku kokeshi, which gained fame in 1969 when Princess Michiko purchased one.
Ryoka was a true pioneer, establishing her own kokeshi business employing mostly women, and her designs have earned numerous awards, including three prestigious Prime Minister’s Awards. Her works range from fine art pieces to playful children’s toys, but it is her large-scale kokeshi, like this one, that are regarded as her masterpieces and rarely seen on the market.
Standing an impressive 43cm tall, this doll showcases Ryoka’s exceptional carving and painting techniques. The hair and top knot are finely detailed, while the kimono is beautifully decorated with carved and hand-painted floral patterns. The thoughtful touches, such as the carved sleeve ends, demonstrate her exquisite attention to detail.
Dating from the 1970s, this vintage kokeshi remains in excellent condition and bears the artist’s signature on the bottom.
A truly collectible work of art, this piece embodies the pioneering spirit and mastery of Aoki Ryoka.
