Very Tall Vintage Kokeshi Doll by Sekiguchi

This very tall vintage kokeshi doll by Sekiguchi is exquisite and in perfect condition. Standing on a dark wooden base she is 76cm (30″) tall. The carved design of her kimono and obi are meticulous. With large leaves etched into the kimono and the obi checkered all in simple design not deterring from the beauty of the wood grain. Her beautiful face is petite and peaceful and her hair is drawn up into a bun with a decorative kanzashi. The Sekaguchi stamp of authentication is at the back down low and also a small plaque with the name of doll and another signature. An exquisite kokeshi doll in excellent conditon, a highly collectable kokeshi by Sekaguchi very rare to find a kokeshi by Sekaguchi of this size and quality outside of a museum.

Sekaguchi passed away in 2018 but his family carry on with the tradition of making sasaku kokeshi in his own museum where he worked and lived. Sekaguchi was a winner of many awards, such as the Ministry of International Trade Industry Award in 1978, Prime Minister’s Award and many others.

Sekaguchi favoured dogwood for his pieces and used many types of motifs which include elements of festivals, nature especially clouds, cherry blossoms and the gingko leaf.
