Kokeshi

Vintage 1950s Miniature "Noddy Head" (Kubi-Furi) Kabuki Kokeshi

Product details

Capture the dramatic flair of traditional Japanese theatre with this rare, early 1950s Kubi-Furi (nodding or "Noddy" head) Kokeshi doll. Standing at a charming 12cm tall, this mid-century gem combines playful kinetic movement with highly sophisticated, classical artistry, featuring a meticulously hand-painted illustration from the world of Kabuki theatre.

Perched on a slender neck peg, the perfectly round, natural hardwood head tilts and nods charmingly at the slightest breeze or touch. Her serene, closed eyes, subtle pink lips, and simple fine-line fringe are contrasted beautifully by the bold, dramatic graphic painted onto her body.

The tapered black-lacquered kimono serves as a striking backdrop for a highly detailed depiction of a Kabuki performer—complete with iconic white Keshō face paint, flowing white theatrical hair, a vibrant crimson vest, and traditional gold-toned Hakama trousers. A sweeping stroke of silver paint accents the collar, evoking the elegant drape of a stage costume.

A Rare Mid-Century Collector's Vignette

Dating to the post-war creative kokeshi boom of the early 1950s, this 12cm miniature has survived with its delicate nodding mechanism completely intact. The natural wood on the head has mellowed over the decades into a smooth, warm amber tone, offering a beautiful, authentic vintage patina.
