Vintage Creative Kokeshi Doll by Usaburo

Product details

Add a touch of iconic Japanese craftsmanship to your space with this beautiful vintage Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi doll by the world-renowned master artisan Usaburo Okamoto (1917–2009). Founding the famous Usaburo workshop in Gunma prefecture, Okamoto revolutionized kokeshi art by utilizing unique wood grains and deep, rich tones to give his figures a distinctly modern, soulful warmth.

Organic Wood Grain & Elegant Carving

Standing at 18cm tall, this piece perfectly exemplifies Usaburo’s signature design philosophy. Rather than hiding the timber, the doll’s heavy bob-cut hair and draped kimono are sculpted directly into a deeply stained, beautifully grained native hardwood. The rich chestnut and amber tones of the wood create a gorgeous, organic texture that feels incredibly tactile.

The lower half of her column body is minimally and exquisitely hand-carved with a delicate branch of plum blossoms (ume) in contrasting stark white and vibrant crimson. A subtle red collar (eri) peeks out from the neckline, bringing a classic pop of traditional color to her minimalist, serene silhouette.
