Vintage Kokeshi by Hosaka Torao (保坂虎男)
Product details
These beautifully crafted Kokeshi represent Saitō Okichi, known as Tōjin Okichi (1841–1893), the 19th-century geisha whose life became emblematic of Japan’s early encounters with the West. Associated with Townsend Harris, the first U.S. Consul to Japan during the country’s opening, Okichi’s life story has long been retold as one of coerced duty, romanticised diplomacy, and the social pressures faced by women during a time of profound national change. Her legacy continues to inspire artists, historians, and collectors alike.
This kokeshi is usually portrayed as a tall, slender figure with a gently face and delicate kanzashi woven into her hair. Each doll features a richly coloured kimono adorned with traditional motifs—flowers, bamboo leaves, pine branches, fans, and stylised waves. Signature elements of this family's work include the snugly wrapped upper kimono and the tightly fitted lower half, creating a beautifully elongated silhouette.
This particular Kokeshi stands 24cm tall and is in very good vintage condition, retaining its original charm and detailing. The artist’s signature is clearly marked on the base, confirming its authenticity and craftsmanship.
