Kokeshi doll vintage by master Yamanaka Sanpei (1926-1992).
Born in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture Japan, a graduate of Textile Engineering School a member of Japan Kokeshi Crafts Association and an avid photographer. He won over 20 Kokeshi Exhibition Awards since 1961 as well as photography awards. Among them the most important: the Prime MInister Award in 1979.
This doll is characteritic of his minimalist mid century modern era. Sanpei utilises the natural qualities of wood and it's natural grain providing decoration to his dolls. Dolls portray wonderful traditional hairstyles through the use of “chattering’ and controlled carving. His head and facial designs are most expressive, particularly with figures of children.
